Apple and Google announced their collaboration in developing the Covid-19 tracking system some time ago. The inaugural version of the Application programming interface (API) system, named Exposure Notification, is now available and ready to be adopted by health authorities to be developed into government-made applications.
Both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android will provide software updates for government-made applications based on their homemade technology. Apple has even rolled out the API Exposure Notification support in iOS 13.5 update
There are currently 23 countries reportedly interested in using software made by Apple and Google. In addition to the US, Germany plans to also use the Exposure Notification technology to make maps. Likewise, France and Britain, who reportedly were also interested in using APIs made by the two giant companies.
These countries are interested in the lure of user data protection offered by the system. Apple and Google boast that they do not use GPS to track Covid-19 patients and prioritize protecting the user’s privacy. This technology uses the concept of contact tracing that relies on Bluetooth to track patients.
More precisely, this system utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) which does not drain the smartphone battery when activated. To collect data, there are three keys used namely tracing key, daily tracing key , and rolling proximity identifier.
This software will track users who may have had contact or contact with positive patients with Covid-19. Later, health authorities can identify suspected infected patients, then ask them for independent quarantine.
This technology can make it easier to track, rather than asking positive patients and requiring them to remember having contact with anyone and anywhere. This system can also identify people without symptoms who can unwittingly transmit the virus to others.
The success of the software depends on how much the system was adopted by the public. Summarized from Phone Arena , Friday (05/22/2020), Apple and Google said that this system will be deactivated when the pandemic has ended which until now has not been able to predict when it will end.
